Yeongnam University Selected for Advanced Innovation Convergence Project

  • Yeongnam University of Science and Technology has been selected for the Advanced Innovation Convergence University (COSS) project, organized by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation. This project aims to cultivate high-tech talent in fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence at a national level through collaboration and convergence among universities.

The Ministry of Education recently announced the selection of five new areas under the "local government participation type" for the COSS project. These areas are Green Bio, Advanced Materials and Nano Convergence, Data Security and Utilization Convergence, Next-Generation Display, and IoT. Yeongnam University of Science and Technology, in alliance with Gangwon State, Kangwon National University, Ajou University, Chungnam National University, and Hanyang University, was selected in the data security and utilization convergence field.

This project involves local governments and requires at least 40% participation from both metropolitan and non-metropolitan universities. Yeongnam University of Science and Technology, along with its partners, will receive financial support of 10.2 billion won per year for four years (2024-2027) to execute the project.

In response to the growing need for cybersecurity, Yeongnam University of Science and Technology established a cybersecurity department in 2014. The department trains cybersecurity experts and operates a security control centre and a cyber infringement response centre. These facilities allow for autonomous hacking attacks and defence technology practice 24 hours a day, helping to cultivate practical, working-level human resources.

Lee Jae-Yong, president of Yeongnam University of Science and Technology, stated, "We will actively collaborate with local governments, universities, and industries to develop practical talents in data security and utilization convergence, meeting the technological needs of society."

This initiative aims to enhance the university's role in addressing contemporary challenges in cybersecurity and data utilization, leveraging its established expertise and resources to contribute to the broader national effort in advanced technological education and innovation.
