Vietnamese Institutions Launch Semiconductor Training Plans

  • In the 2023-2024 academic year, numerous universities and colleges in Vietnam are unveiling their admission plans for semiconductor training. The semiconductor technology and integrated circuit design sectors are anticipated to garner significant attention during the 2024 enrollment period, driven by increased labor demand and competitive salaries. Semiconductors serve as the cornerstone of contemporary technology, fueling innovation across various domains. The escalating need for sophisticated microchips has positioned the global semiconductor market as a focal point of technological progress. Against this backdrop, Vietnam is emerging as a notable participant, swiftly ascending the global semiconductor rankings.

To capitalize on emerging opportunities and address the demand, several higher education institutions have declared intentions to admit a larger number of students in semiconductor-related programs, with many others initiating enrollment plans for the first time. In the current year, over 10 universities have publicly disclosed their enrollment strategies for newly introduced majors in integrated circuit design and semiconductor technology for the 2024 and 2025 academic seasons, encompassing both graduate and master's programs. Among them are prominent institutions in Vietnam's tertiary education landscape, such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Saigon International University (SIU), Can Tho University, FPT University, Phenikaa University, and the University of Danang (UD), which includes the University of Science and Technology, University of Technology and Education, and Vietnam–Korea University of Information and Communication Technology.

Additional institutions joining the semiconductor enrollment trend include Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCMC), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT), and University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH). According to statistics, Vietnam's semiconductor market is anticipated to achieve a value of $7 billion by 2028, displaying a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.69% from 2023 to 2028. Analysts suggest that the increasing investments in 5G technology represent an emerging trend that will significantly influence market expansion. Vietnam aims to extend the coverage of the 5G network in urban areas and high-tech industrial zones, with plans to soon authorize nationwide commercialization of 5G.
