The Higher Education Ministry will provide research matching grants between industries and university teaching hospitals

  • Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) will begin providing research matching grants between industries and university teaching hospitals (HPUs) next year. He stated that this is to encourage industries to use HPUs in various research projects and to produce innovations in the healthcare and health services sectors. "We must approach and collaborate closely with industries, particularly when conducting joint research." This synergy must be strategically built, particularly with large corporations that lead and pioneer the development of technology and innovation such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. This is also crucial because the universities can share the results of their research either in terms of royalties, start-ups, and so on,” he said at the launch of the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) Research Carnival 2023. To that end, he stated that the KPT will prepare a strategic paper focusing on two things: a review of the ministry's policies relating to start-ups under institutions of higher learning, and a more effective strategy and injection to boost start-ups in order to make the entity a valuable contributor to the country's economy.

I believe that there are research innovations already underway in universities, including PPUM, but that they require a boost. So, we will research all startup policies in order to overcome all challenges and obstacles". Mohamed Khaled also wishes for any new research findings or innovation results from any HPU to be applied to all other HPUs in order to strengthen cooperation. We will ask the other nine HPUs to use applications like the UMMC's Patient Journey Apps, which was developed by PPUM, and the same goes for other findings." "The ministry will keep an eye on everything because its budget for HPU is substantial." For example, PPUM receives RM400 million per year, which is used not only to train doctors and specialists but also to stimulate research and innovation," he explained. At today's function, the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) and PPUM exchanged documents on a collaboration agreement, while the UMMC launched.
