Sri Lanka Unveils 'Suhuru School Project' for ICT Boost in Schools

  • The 'Suhuru School Project' has received approval from the Cabinet of Ministers, marking a significant stride in advancing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education. Proposed by the President, who serves as the Minister of Technology, and the Minister of Education, the initiative aims to provide essential ICT equipment to 1000 schools preparing students for the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination. Additionally, it introduces a scholarship program supporting 5000 students from low-income families pursuing ICT studies at the G.C.E. (Advanced Level).

The 'Suhuru School Project' is a forward-thinking endeavour designed to narrow the digital divide and cultivate technological proficiency among Sri Lanka's youth. By supplying the necessary tools for ICT education to 1000 schools, the project seeks to create an environment conducive to learning and fostering innovation and creativity. The selection and distribution of resources will be overseen by the Ministries of Technology and Education, ensuring widespread benefits.

Recognizing the financial obstacles hindering students from low-income families from pursuing ICT education, the project introduces a scholarship program funded by the President's Fund. This program will financially assist 5000 deserving students, easing economic burdens and encouraging talented individuals to excel in ICT, irrespective of their financial background.

The funding for the 'Suhuru School Project' will be drawn from the Telecommunication Development Fee Fund, allocated for the development of the telecommunications sector in Sri Lanka. This utilization underscores the government's commitment to using existing resources for educational advancement. Successful implementation will require collaboration among various stakeholders, including schools, telecommunications authorities, and the President's Fund, ensuring seamless operation and maximum impact.
