The Ministry of Technology has announced the successful introduction of AI Clubs in schools, representing a notable advancement in fostering AI literacy among young students. This initiative is a key component of the National AI Strategy 2024-2028, designed to cultivate AI knowledge and skills, equipping students for a future where proficiency in AI is essential for achievement.
The initiative is a joint endeavor supported by the Ministry of Technology, the Ministry of Education, AIClub, SLASSCOM, and IronOne. Dr. Nisha Talagala, a globally recognized leader in AI education and CEO of AIClub, heads the program. State Minister of Information Technology Kanaka Herath highlighted that their National AI Strategy is a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at overcoming challenges in AI adoption and democratizing AI knowledge at all levels of society.
“The Ministry of Technology is launching AI clubs in schools nationwide along with the Ministry of Education to promote AI literacy and innovation, with the aim of creating a thriving AI ecosystem in Sri Lanka that benefits all sectors of society.”
This integrated platform, bolstered by AIClub's expertise and supported by private sector and development agency collaboration, along with dedicated leadership from policymakers and administrators, positions Sri Lanka to potentially achieve advanced levels of AI literacy in schools. Successful scaling of the pilot program aims to align Sri Lanka with leading global standards. The ultimate goal is to ensure that AI education is accessible to all schools nationwide, encompassing diverse regions and demographics across Sri Lanka.
