Since 2021, South Korean researchers and academics have utilized IonQ's quantum systems to create applications across diverse fields. This collaboration not only supports South Korea's objective of becoming a global quantum computing hub but also underscores IonQ's commitment to advancing quantum technology in the region. The nation's progressive stance on quantum computing is additionally highlighted by its upcoming launch of cloud services featuring domestically developed 20-qubit quantum computers, available for public use in the latter part of this year. Looking ahead to 2026, the government aims to initiate the development of a more sophisticated 50-qubit computing system.
IonQ's involvement in South Korea goes beyond its partnership with SKKU. The company has established collaborations with both the government and Hyundai Motors, demonstrating its dedication to fostering technological advancements in the region. In alignment with its comprehensive technology strategy, South Korea is set to conduct flight tests of urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles above the Gyeongin Ara waterway connecting the Han River and the Yellow Sea from August.
