South Korea to establish Joint AI Research lab in the US

  • South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has announced plans to establish a joint artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory in collaboration with New York University (NYU). Named the Global AI Frontier Lab, this innovative research centre will be based at NYU and co-led by two renowned computer scientists, Cho Kyung-hyun and Yann LeCun.

Cho Kyung-hyun, a board member of the South Korean AI startup Upstage, and Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Meta Platforms, bring a wealth of expertise and leadership to the lab. Their involvement signifies the high level of research and development expected from this collaboration.

The Global AI Frontier Lab aims to conduct cutting-edge AI research projects by inviting experts from Seoul and Washington, fostering international cooperation in the field. This initiative reflects the ministry's commitment to advancing global AI research and creating a collaborative environment for scientists from both countries.

The Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, the ministry's arm leading the establishment of the joint AI lab, will begin recruiting South Korean researchers to join the lab. These researchers will have the opportunity to engage in significant AI studies, contributing to the global discourse on AI innovation.

The lab's establishment is part of South Korea's broader strategy to strengthen its position in the global AI landscape. By collaborating with NYU, a leading institution in AI research, South Korea aims to enhance its technological capabilities and foster innovation through international partnerships.

This joint effort underscores the importance of global cooperation in addressing complex AI challenges and advancing the field. The Global AI Frontier Lab is expected to become a hub for pioneering AI research, driving forward new developments and facilitating the exchange of knowledge between South Korean and American researchers.
