Nvidia, Japan's Tech Institute partner for Hybrid Supercomputer

  • Nvidia Corporation is reportedly teaming up with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology to develop a hybrid supercomputer that incorporates quantum computing capabilities, as part of Japan’s broader quantum computing initiative. This collaboration is integral to the development of ABCI-Q, a quantum-AI hybrid cloud system currently in the works.

Nvidia’s involvement includes supplying graphics processing units for ABCI-Q and offering quantum computing software through a cloud service. The system, slated for launch in fiscal 2025 with a subscription-based model, aims to support various applications ranging from drug discovery to logistics optimization.

Quantum computers, although promising for tackling complex problems, are prone to errors due to environmental sensitivity. Integrating them with a supercomputer addresses this issue, enabling more reliable and efficient computation.

The cloud-based system will allow researchers and businesses to submit problems and receive solutions, democratizing access to quantum computing technology and fostering its development in the private sector. For example, a logistics company could leverage the system to optimize shipping routes, considering factors like distance and CO2 emissions, even for routes with multiple stops and full cargo.

Nvidia has been actively involved in Japan’s AI ecosystem, collaborating with research institutions, corporations, and startups. Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has outlined plans to establish an AI research facility, support startups, and enhance AI education programs in Japan.

The country's attractiveness to tech companies seeking to diversify from China is evident, with Microsoft announcing significant investments in cloud and AI capabilities in Japan. Similarly, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is investing in local sourcing for its Japanese chip manufacturing plant, supported by the Japanese government's substantial investments.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is also expanding its presence in Japan, investing billions to expand its data center infrastructure and strengthen local operations. These investments underscore Japan’s growing significance in the global technology landscape.
