KAIST to Set Up AI Joint Research Center with Naver, Intel

  • KAIST, in collaboration with Naver and Intel, is set to launch an "Artificial Intelligence Joint Research Center" at its Daejeon headquarters in the first half of this year. This partnership marks Intel's first venture into supporting a joint research center at a South Korean university, emphasizing the development of a software platform for AI semiconductors.

The center's operation will span three years, during which Intel will spearhead 20 to 30 industry-academic research projects. These projects aim to cultivate a platform ecosystem for GAUDI, an AI chip focusing on learning and reasoning. Research endeavours will concentrate on open-source software development in AI domains like natural language processing and machine learning. Half of the research will delve into autonomous subjects, while the remainder will concentrate on enhancing AI semiconductor performance.

Naver, leveraging its AI service capabilities on its cloud platform, will provide "GAUDI2" to the joint research center. Around 20 professors and 120 graduate students from KAIST specializing in artificial intelligence and software will participate in the research.

Professors Kim Jung-ho and Lee Dong-soo will lead the center, with Professor Seong Min-hyuk and Kwon Se-joong as deputies. The center's duration may be extended based on research outcomes and partner requirements.

According to Professor Kim Jung-ho, the establishment of the joint research center holds significant value in enhancing KAIST's expertise in AI development, semiconductor design, and operating large-scale AI data centers. It will also provide crucial experience in managing AI computing infrastructure essential for future research and development endeavors.
