SuRaLa Net Co. Ltd., a Japanese e-learning service provider, recently engaged in discussions with Ifugao State University (IFSU) to introduce its innovative digital learning program. Clyde Pumihic, the head of IFSU's International Affairs and Linkages Office (IALO), disclosed that this program aims to revolutionize mathematics education for basic-level learners. Facilitated by the Basic Human Needs (BHN) Association in Japan, a partner organization of IFSU, the meeting held in early March sought to support ICT initiatives and sustainability efforts at the university.
The collaboration between SuRaLa Net and IFSU seeks to equip the university with the necessary tools to deliver mathematics education through digital platforms. Pumihic emphasized that by embracing digital learning as a global educational trend, IFSU aims to empower its educators and pre-service teachers, particularly those in the College of Education at IFSU Lamut and Potia campuses, with support from the Department of Planning and Information Management (DPIM)-ICT Section.
During the meeting, Tomoko Fujihira from SuRaLa Net's Overseas Business Development Department highlighted the key features of the SuRaLa Ninja! platform. These features include animated Ninja characters serving as teachers, gamification elements, real-time monitoring of mathematical skill levels, and the enhancement of mental calculation abilities among learners. The collaboration was facilitated by BHN project officer Kango Kii, aligning with the mutual agreement to promote ICT education within higher education institutions at IFSU.
In line with IFSU President Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon's direction to embrace Education 5.0, a memorandum of agreement (MoA) is being drafted to officially launch the Digital Math Teaching Program (DMTP). Pumihic explained that this approach emphasizes utilizing new technologies to foster personalized teaching methods, prioritize the social and emotional development of students, and seek solutions to improve societal well-being. Spearheaded by IALO, this initiative underscores the university's commitment to innovation and educational advancement.
