The Role of Parental Involvement in Children's Education Outcomes

  • Parental involvement is a subject of interest in the present study in light of its role in determining children’s educational performance and development. It encompasses the strategies and techniques that parents and other caregivers can employ to help the child learn in school and at home. Several studies have evidenced that when parents are involved in their children’s learning process by assisting with assignments, attending school-related activities, or speaking to teachers’, it increases the child’s performance, reduces misbehavior, and fosters social competence. Apart from the academic achievement parental involvement helps in creating a conducive home atmosphere which enhances the child’s self-esteem, interest and responsibilities. Therefore, through the promotion of close-home school relations, parental involvement enhances educational achievements and builds a positive learning and success culture for a lifetime.

    Importance of Parental Involvement

    Studies have also shown that parents’ engagement with schools is a critical factor that significantly influences the child’s performance, behavior and emotional state. If parents get more involved in their children’s learning processes, the students are likely to record better results, display good behavior and have higher goals in their lives. This participation goes beyond academic achievement to encompass improved communication skills, better friendships, and self-esteem. Finally, parental involvement acts as a force that plays a crucial role in creating a positive change in the development of individuals who are more capable of dealing with the demands of school and life.

    Parental Involvement Strategies

    The ways that parents can get involved include; contacting the teachers, meeting the teachers, helping with homework, and participating in school events. Such actions help children to understand that education is appreciated in the home environment, thus strengthening their desire to learn.     The involvement of parents in early childhood education is very important in laying down a background for future academic achievement. Learning apps add to the involvement by offering home learning activities to the kids as well as creating an engaging interaction between parents and children. These technological tools do not allow the physical distance and scheduling barriers that make it difficult for parents to be informed and involved in their children’s education. Thus, by using technology, schools and families can enhance parental involvement and create a strong partnership.
