The World Bank has sanctioned $80 million in funding to improve the quality of higher education in Cambodia, emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This financing, which comes from the International Development Association (IDA), is intended to foster the development of a skilled workforce to propel the country's economic growth, as stated in a press release from the World Bank Group.
As stated in the release, the initiative is set to benefit around 32,000 students, including 13,000 women, over the next six years. It aims to enhance educational curricula, train lecturers, and integrate digital learning methods. The program will be carried out in nine public higher education institutions and is anticipated to produce graduates and research outcomes that align with the country’s economic goals.
The bank highlighted that particular emphasis will be placed on enhancing educational opportunities for female students and individuals with disabilities, as well as supporting female faculty members. Additionally, the project will incorporate climate-resilient infrastructure standards and promote climate-related research.
“Strengthening high-quality higher education and preparing a critical mass of highly skilled graduates will help Cambodia advance its human capital and promote inclusive growth and development,” said World Bank country manager Tania Meyer.
The project builds on the achievements of a prior initiative that enhanced learning opportunities for more than 128,000 students by introducing new academic programs and research projects, along with upgrading laboratory facilities, as stated in the press release.
