Vietnam targets top 500 global universities by 2030

  • The Vietnamese government has ratified the 'Education Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045', with the goal of having a minimum of five higher education institutions in the world's top 500 universities by 2030. The program, as covered by Vietnam News Agency (VNA), is aimed at placing Vietnam among the top four countries in Southeast Asia and the top 10 in Asia in higher education.

Experts point to the necessity of breakthrough reforms to make universities more competitive in international rankings. Nguyen Vinh San of Da Nang University laid out the achievements of recent years, crediting them to enhanced quality of teaching and research. He called for the need to focus on investing in high-potential schools and giving them autonomy to lead higher education development, pointing to China's successful experience in developing world-class universities.

Its key strategies are hiring internationally qualified staff, upgrading research capacities, and publishing more in global outlets. Vietnam will improve its international academic footprint through the capacity-building activities and international partnerships with top institutions across the world.

As previously stated, Vietnamese universities continue to enhance their global rankings, and the strategic drive by the government will only hasten their progress, further consolidating the nation's position as an upcoming education hub in the region.
