Vietnam National University Advances Notably in Webometrics Ranking

  • In the 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi secured the 649th spot globally, standing as the 11th highest-ranking institution in Southeast Asia and the 140th in Asia. Notably, VNU, Hanoi achieved its inaugural placement within the top 500 in terms of impact rank, claiming the 495th position.

    As of February 2024, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, claimed the top position in Vietnam, as per the rankings released by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council. The latest ranking also featured several other Vietnamese educational institutions, including Ton Duc Thang University (1,054th), Duy Tan University (1,115th), Nguyen Tat Thanh University (1,189th), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (1,712th), Da Nang University (2,057th), Can Tho University (2,068th), and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry (2,092nd).

    The biannual Webometrics list evaluates the digitalization capabilities and influence of academic resources in higher education institutions. It considers factors such as the volume of website content, the visibility and impact of publications on their websites, the accessibility of academic resources on Google Scholar, and the number of citations in the Scopus database. For this edition, Webometrics retained the ranking methodology from January 2021, wherein the "Presence" indicator was eliminated. Instead, other indicators, with "Visibility" being the most significant at 50%, "Excellence" at 40%, and "Transparency" at 10%, were given priority.

    The "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" is a project led by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research unit affiliated with the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research institution in Spain. CSIC is a prominent basic research organization in Europe, comprising 126 centers and institutes across Spain as of 2006. Operating under the Ministry of Education, its primary mission is to advance scientific research to enhance the country's scientific and technological advancements, ultimately contributing to the well-being of the citizens.
