UTP VC Highlights Malaysia's Education Shift Toward Industry 4.0

  • Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib highlighted that Malaysian education is advancing with a significant focus on Industry 4.0 and Education 4.0, bolstered by government initiatives. He emphasized that this development is essential for shaping the future trajectory of Malaysia’s higher education institutions and aligning them with the nation's goals.

The focus, according to him, is on developing skills, integrating technology and collaborating with industry to create a responsive world-class system. “Our goal is to produce graduates who are both technology-centric and human-centric - hi-tech and high touch - driving higher education to new levels", he said at the closing of the World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2024.

He said ESTCON 2024 is centred around the theme 'Future Positioning through Sustainable Energy, Digitalisation and Smart Community,' exploring energy transition and transformation to foster sustainable living. “ESTCON 2024 addresses the contemporary trends and challenges across various disciplines in innovation, engineering and technology. The Congress has made significant strides in realizing the theme of 'Future Positioning through Sustainable Energy, Digitalisation, and Smart Community”, he said.

Mohamed Ibrahim noted that by adopting cutting-edge technology and sustainability practices, ESTCON not only stays relevant but also leads in shaping the future. The Congress showcased 560 papers from participants across 25 countries and drew more than 1,000 delegates, including approximately 250 who did not present, underscoring its significant growth and impact.

He said UTP’s efforts in promoting sustainable energy, driving digital transformation and fostering smart communities demonstrate the university’s proactive approach to addressing future challenges and opportunities. “We are not just responding to trends; we are setting them, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible and positioning ourselves at the forefront of global progress. This forward-thinking mindset allows us to anticipate future needs and create impactful solutions that benefit society as a whole”, he said.

To demonstrate UTP’s dedication to research, innovation, and commercialization, he unveiled the UTP Ignite Website, a specialized platform highlighting the university’s groundbreaking innovations. “The UTP Ignite Website serves as a gateway to the cutting-edge research and technologies being developed by our exceptional researchers”. "Through this platform, potential investors, industry partners and collaborators can gain in-depth insights into our innovative solutions, including dynamic three-minute videos featuring 18 of our most promising technologies", he added.
