UrFU Humanities students collaborate with China's Academy of Social Sciences

  • A delegation from the Ural Federal University's Ural Institute of Humanities (UrIH) recently visited the Institute of East European, Russian, and Central Asian Studies (IEERCAS) at the prestigious Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing. During their visit, the UrIH representatives engaged in discussions with the Institute's Director and heads of various scientific departments, including the Strategic Research Department and the Research Institutes focusing on Modern Russian Politics and Society, as well as Russian Culture and History.

The main focus of their discussions revolved around the prospect of collaborative research endeavours concerning Russian-Chinese relations, Orthodox Church history, and the study of Old Believers. Additionally, the UrFU historians extended invitations to their Chinese counterparts to participate in the upcoming IX Ural Archaeographical Readings scientific conference.

Furthermore, there were discussions regarding organizing a joint event celebrating the traditional cultures and histories of both China and Russia. This initiative holds particular significance as Russian President Vladimir Putin recently declared 2024 as the Year of Chinese Culture. Plans are underway to organize an international scientific seminar on this theme, along with the intention to formalize cooperation through the signing of a memorandum between UrFU and IEERCAS of CASS in the near future.

Yulia Zapariy, the Head of the Office of Research of Scientific and Innovative Work Organization at UrFU, expressed optimism about the outcomes of the visit, emphasizing its potential to kickstart a fruitful collaboration. This partnership with a leading center of social and humanitarian knowledge in the People's Republic of China is anticipated to greatly enhance UrIH's educational and research initiatives, particularly in the realm of Chinese studies. Moreover, it is expected to bolster the activities of the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies, which commenced its operations in late 2023.
