University of Liverpool Inks Key Partnerships at Shanghai Sister Cities Event

  • The University of Liverpool has recently entered into fresh partnership, educational, and innovation accords with universities and research institutions in Shanghai. These three novel agreements were unveiled during a festive occasion held in Shanghai, with a delegation from the University of Liverpool in attendance, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the sister cities relationship between Liverpool and Shanghai.

The Museum of Art Pudong hosted a significant event co-led by the University of Liverpool under the guidance of Prof Tariq Ali, the Pro Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement & Partnerships. Key figures from Liverpool City Council, Liverpool China Partnership, and Liverpool John Moores University were also present.

Distinguished government officials from the UK and China were also in attendance, alongside representatives from Liverpool City Council, such as Ms. Ma Yinghui, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office in Shanghai, and Ms. Catherine Sinclair-Jones, Director of the British Council in East China. Additionally, the University of Liverpool and Shanghai Jiaotong University, both prestigious institutions, have unveiled a strategic partnership aimed at fostering research collaborations in mutually beneficial areas, supported by a seed fund.

The University of Liverpool and East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) signed an agreement to support undergraduate and postgraduate student mobility in several disciplines. This builds on the established and successful partnership between ECUST and the University’s Materials Innovation Factory. The University of Liverpool and Yangtze Delta Research Institute of Tsinghua University signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore industry-led research collaboration.

Accompanying Prof Tariq Ali of the University of Liverpool, members of the delegation visited Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou. Founded in 2006 through collaboration between Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool, XJTLU has swiftly expanded to become China's foremost international joint venture university. Renowned for its excellence in both education and research, it has garnered a formidable reputation.

Prof Tariq Ali said, “This anniversary celebration has been a catalyst for the University of Liverpool to establish new partnerships and further grow existing links with outstanding universities and organizations in the great city and region of Shanghai". “I am very pleased that we have arranged a special visit to Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU) for members of the delegation to meet with students and staff”.

The festivities coincided with a sequence of events held in early June. Prof Ali and Dr. Xiaofeng Wu, the International Partnerships Manager, were among the delegation visiting Shanghai to fortify educational connections between the two cities. This endeavor builds upon the achievements of the past 25 years while also envisioning a promising future.
