Universiti Malaya leads Malaysia in QS World University Rankings

  • In the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Universiti Malaya (UM) stands out as the foremost institution in Malaysia, with 38 subjects included in the rankings, 21 of which achieved placement within the top 100 globally. Notably, UM's Library and Information Management subject secured the highest position, ranking 27th worldwide. 

    UM also witnessed significant advancements in two subjects, notably Pharmacy, which climbed 29 places to 72nd position, attributed to improvements in Academic and Employer Reputation. Similarly, the Economics program saw an improvement, moving up 18 positions to 93rd place, primarily due to enhancements in research metrics.

    Furthermore, Malaysian universities have made their mark in the global top 20 for two subjects, with Taylor's University excelling in Hospitality (19th) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) being recognized as the second-best in Asia for Petroleum Engineering (20th). This edition of the ranking offers comprehensive insights into the performance of 240 programs across 25 Malaysian universities.

    Overall, Malaysia's performance stands out as the third-best in Asia and the sixth-best globally. Among its ranked programs, 84 experienced improvements, while 31 saw a decline, and 87 remained stable within their respective ranks or bands, resulting in an overall improvement rate of 22%. Additionally, 38 programs debuted in the rankings, with two programs entering the top 50, including Taylor's University's Marketing program and UM's Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program.

    Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) emerges as Malaysia's most improved university, with 26 subjects ranked, 12 of which experienced an upward trajectory, leading to an overall improvement rate of 42%. Notably, UPM's Veterinary Science climbed six positions to secure 40th place. Management and Science University (MSU) showcased notable progress, advancing from 46th to 29th place in Hospitality and Leisure Management.
