UNESCO applauds Bangkok for Joining Global Learning Cities

  • Bangkok is establishing a new Learning City initiative to enhance various aspects of education, including early childhood care, compulsory schooling, skill development, and lifelong learning opportunities. Recently joining the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), the city has received support from UNESCO Bangkok to advance its 'Learning for Life, Opportunities for All' agenda.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) showcased its commitment to lifelong learning during the 'BKK Read & Learn Festival' at Benchakitti Forest Park. Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon emphasized the importance of continuous learning beyond traditional schooling, highlighting the city's focus on equitable education access across all stages of life.

The BMA's strategy encompasses comprehensive education policies aimed at fostering a culture of learning for everyone, anywhere, and at any time. This holistic approach covers early childhood education, compulsory schooling, skill enhancement, and lifelong learning initiatives, signalling a transformative journey towards educational equity.

Bangkok's inclusion in the UNESCO GNLC underscores its dedication to sustainable development through education. Rika Yorozu, an education specialist at UNESCO Bangkok, emphasized the power of learning in driving sustainable progress. Bangkok's membership in this global network provides opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration with over 350 Learning Cities worldwide, supported by UNESCO's commitment to bolstering education initiatives.

The recognition of Bangkok as a UNESCO Global Learning City reflects the city's robust educational infrastructure and the government's support for building learning-oriented communities nationwide. With UNESCO's backing and the Thai government's commitment, Bangkok's Learning City initiative is poised to make significant strides in promoting lifelong learning and fostering inclusive educational opportunities for all residents.
