Ukraine and Japan Deepen Cooperation in Education and Science

  • On July 29, the inaugural meeting of the Ukrainian-Japanese Joint Commission on Cooperation in Education, Science, and Technology was held, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. The event featured Ukrainian Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi and Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Masahito Moriyama.

The meeting commenced with formal greetings, where Minister Lisovyi expressed gratitude to the Japanese Government for its steadfast support of Ukraine, its condemnation of Russian aggression, and its participation in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.

Key discussions focused on Ukraine's long-term reconstruction through education, science, and technology. The commission explored avenues for academic exchanges, joint research projects, and vocational education cooperation between the two nations. Specific topics included the potential transfer of computer devices for distance education to Ukraine, collaboration with Japanese businesses to supply educational institutions with modern equipment, and the establishment of joint training centers.

"Today, it is more important than ever to develop research, technology, and innovation. Ukraine is gaining unique experience in defense technology, security, digital education, and the medical, agricultural, and energy sectors, which can serve as a valuable basis for research, development, and testing of new technologies. We propose to work together to create innovative solutions that will help not only Ukraine but also other countries to overcome such challenges", stated Minister Lisovyi.

The Japanese delegation announced plans to translate and donate 25,000 books for children in Ukrainian pre-school and primary schools. Minister Moriyama detailed opportunities for Ukrainian students and researchers to study and intern in Japan, offering programs in Japanese language and culture, science, and technology.

Concluding the meeting, the ministers signed the General Results of the first meeting of the Ukrainian-Japanese Joint Commission on Cooperation in Education, Science, and Technology. They agreed to prepare a list of projects in education, science, and technology for discussion and approval at the next commission meeting, setting the stage for further implementation.
