United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has announced the launch of a new Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) for the 2025 academic year. This new initiative aims to meet the growing demand for specialized expertise in fields such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, offering high-level education in crucial areas like climate change, population studies, natural hazards, and coastal zone management.
The program is designed to help students gain advanced knowledge in GIS and improve their scientific research, critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills. The goal is to develop scientific research that can help address environmental and economic challenges both locally and globally.
Prof. Mohamed Bin Huwaidin, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, expressed his excitement about the program's launch, saying, “We are delighted to announce the Doctor of Philosophy in Geographic Information Science, which aims to meet the growing market needs in this evolving field. We are proud to offer this program that enhances students’ capabilities and qualifies them to effectively contribute to achieving the UAE’s vision in innovation and technology”.
The PhD program is part of UAEU’s effort to align its academic offerings with the country’s broader goals of technological advancement. Prof. Naeema Al Hosani, Chair of the Department of Geography and Urban Sustainability, noted that the program will also contribute to strengthening the UAE's geographical and technological infrastructure. "The program aims to equip students with advanced knowledge in Geographic Information Systems, in addition to enhancing their scientific research skills, critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving in this evolving field", she stated.
The PhD program consists of 54 credit hours, which includes both coursework and a research thesis. Core courses will cover topics like spatial analysis, GIS programming, and accuracy assessment. In addition, students will have to pass a comprehensive examination to demonstrate their readiness for research before beginning their thesis work.
This initiative also reflects the UAE's commitment to innovation and technology, which is central to its vision for the future. By offering advanced training in GIS, the program aims to equip students with the skills needed to drive the country's technological growth.
Registration for the program is now open, with the deadline for applications set for March 31, 2025. This new PhD initiative will play a key role in developing the next generation of experts in GIS, empowering them to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
