UAE's Education Minister said that AI Tutors will Support Teachers

  • Artificial Intelligence-based tutors will serve as support for teachers rather than taking over their primary roles as educators, stated the UAE Minister of Education during the World Governments Summit in Dubai. Emphasizing the importance of teachers as role models, Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi highlighted that in the UAE, Artificial Intelligence is employed to assist teachers, emphasizing that, ultimately, the teacher remains at the heart of the educational system.

The Minister highlighted that the country is leveraging AI technologies specifically to alleviate teachers from administrative responsibilities. "Our focus is on streamlining a teacher's tasks to enhance their efficiency. The AI tutor has been created to aid students who may be struggling or in need of extra academic assistance. This, in my view, illustrates how technology can be a supportive tool for teachers. However, if posed with the question of technology versus teachers, my stance will always be in favor of teachers, as they are the backbone of the education system," the Minister emphasized.

The UAE government initiated a program four years ago focusing on future skills, addressing both hard and soft skills. The Minister mentioned a shift in the approach to introducing social-emotional learning in schools, expressing a strong belief that AI can enhance its efficiency.

"At the end of the day, a teacher serves as a role model, bringing a crucial human element to the education system. The significance of a dedicated teacher in motivating students should never be underestimated. Placing students in front of devices continuously may diminish their interest in education. Striking a balance is essential. The crucial aspect is how much time we can afford to release to enable teachers to perform their duties efficiently," Dr. Al Falasi emphasized.
