Tsing Hua University Spearheads Generative AI in Humanities Education

  • Taipei's National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) pioneers the integration of generative AI education into humanities and social science courses, a groundbreaking shift in traditional academic disciplines.     NTHU's College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Education have taken a bold step towards education modernization by introducing generative AI courses last semester. This semester, five additional courses covering cultural analysis, history research, law, and policy have been added. Wu Yung-hsien emphasizes the importance of humanities students utilizing AI tools to stay competitive in a changing technological landscape. Generative AI, particularly ChatGPT, aids in fostering dialogue, inspiring diverse ideas, and automating tasks such as punctuation in ancient texts.

    NTHU's proactive stance extends beyond course offerings, as the first Taiwanese university to establish a dedicated generative AI team. Workshops and courses targeting both technical and non-technical students have been launched, democratizing AI knowledge and promoting interdisciplinary learning. Student Hung Jui-chen, from the Interdisciplinary Program of Humanities and Social Sciences, shares insights from an elective course that showcased AI's potential in scriptwriting. While acknowledging AI's usefulness in gathering materials and interpreting scripts, Hung emphasizes the irreplaceable uniqueness of human creativity.
