An academic delegation from Thailand, led by Sasirit Tangulrat, Director General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East, and African Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati to explore collaboration opportunities. The delegation, comprising professors and scholars from over 13 Thai institutions, emphasized Assam’s strategic importance in strengthening India-Thailand bilateral relations.
During the visit, the delegation toured IIT Guwahati’s Central Instruments Facility and Supercomputing Facility, expressing admiration for the institute’s advanced infrastructure. Sasirit Tangulrat described the experience as 'eye-opening', underscoring the potential for future academic collaborations between Thailand and IIT Guwahati.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, hailed the visit as a significant step in fostering closer academic and research ties. He highlighted the strategic role of Assam in Indo-Thai relations and expressed optimism about potential faculty and student exchange programs, joint research projects, and innovation partnerships. “This partnership will create new opportunities for growth and collaboration, advancing innovation and knowledge exchange between our nations”, said Prof. Jalihal.
The meeting between the delegation and IIT Guwahati’s administration covered several potential areas of cooperation, including academic exchange programs and research collaborations. Representatives from key departments at IIT Guwahati, such as Administration, Alumni and External Relations, and R&D, attended the discussions.
Prof. Jalihal also informed the delegation about various skill development programs at IIT Guwahati, particularly in semiconductors and related industries. He expressed enthusiasm for initiating exchange programs with Thai universities to further develop these fields.
The visit aligns with IIT Guwahati’s commitment to international collaboration and its goal of achieving global standards in education through partnerships. By joining hands with international institutions like those in Thailand, IIT Guwahati aims to enhance educational opportunities, promote innovation, and strengthen academic ties on a global scale.
