A total of 95 Malaysian students have been awarded scholarships to pursue academic degrees and short-term language studies in Taiwan this year, marking the highest number ever granted. This initiative aims to strengthen educational ties between Taiwan and Malaysia.
James Buu, Deputy Head of Mission at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, announced that this year's scholarships, offered under Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE) Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES), represent a new milestone in the engagement between the two nations. Over the past 20 years, this partnership has seen hundreds of Malaysian students graduate from Taiwan's top universities and Mandarin centres, achieving excellence in various fields.
"This year, nine students will pursue doctoral degrees, 18 will undertake master's degrees, and 10 will work towards undergraduate degrees. The remaining 58 students were awarded the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship for Mandarin studies," Buu said.
He noted that there is a growing interest in studying in Taiwan, attributed to the increasing number of English-taught courses and Taiwan’s Muslim-friendly environment, which has attracted many international students.
Among the scholarship recipients, Adam Daniel Armstrong, 28, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue his Master's in Administration. “I’ve been to Taiwan before and know how dynamic the learning environment is there. That is why I decided to apply in the first place,” Armstrong said. “This scholarship will certainly help ease my financial concerns about tuition fees.”
Nursyazwani Jamil, 24, discovered the scholarship opportunity through TikTok and applied just before the deadline. "I was surprised to be selected but am thrilled to have the chance to learn Mandarin in Taiwan", she said. "I’ve been eager to learn the language because of my interest in Chinese drama series. My course lasts for three months, and I am excited to start in August".
Recipients of the Taiwan MOE scholarship will receive NT$40,000 per semester for tuition and expenses, along with a monthly living allowance ranging from NT$15,000 to NT$20,000. HES recipients will receive a monthly stipend of NT$25,000. This record number of scholarships underscores Taiwan’s commitment to fostering educational and cultural exchanges with Malaysia.
