Taiwan and Harvard Launch Doctoral Studies and Scholarship Program

  • Taiwan and Harvard University have initiated a groundbreaking educational collaboration by introducing a comprehensive scholarship program for Taiwanese doctoral students. Announced by Taiwan's Ministry of Education, this venture signifies a substantial advancement in the educational ties between Taiwan and the US, emphasizing their strong academic connection.

Beginning in the upcoming academic year, the partnership will involve the joint selection of five Taiwanese doctoral students annually to attend the Kenneth C Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. These scholarships, spanning up to four years, underscore the commitment of both the Ministry of Education and Harvard to nurturing exceptional academic talent. Building on prior collaborations like the 2011 partnership with Taiwan's Elite University Alliance and the 2020 research collaboration with Harvard's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, this program is a culmination of established groundwork.

Taiwan and the US share a rich history of educational exchange, with around 3,100 US students studying in Taiwan and 22,000 Taiwanese students enrolling in US institutions each year. Notably, 110 Taiwanese students are currently at Harvard, emphasizing the university's significance as a crucial destination for Taiwan's brightest minds. Nicole Lee, interim director of Taiwan's Department of International and Cross-strait Education, stressed the agreement's importance in fortifying the academic and cultural bonds between Taiwan and the United States.

The new scholarship initiative underscores Taiwan's dedication to global academic excellence, with successful PhD scholarship agreements secured with 18 schools ranked in the top 100 worldwide. This program exemplifies the enduring partnership and mutual respect between Taiwan and Harvard University, offering promising opportunities for aspiring Taiwanese scholars to access one of the world's leading academic institutions.

As this program unfolds, it promises not only to benefit the selected students but also to contribute significantly to the ongoing exchange of knowledge and ideas between Taiwan and the global academic community. The implications of such collaborations are profound, serving as a beacon of hope for future scholars and reinforcing the vital role of international educational partnerships in our interconnected world.
