From the summer of 2025, Taipei Tech, a Taiwan-based National Taipei University of Technology, will provide scholarships for graduate students from Penn State University to join research and educational collaborations at Taipei Tech. There will be up to 10 scholarships each year for research stays that will be two to six months long. Applications are available until February 10, 2025.
“We are thankful for the 10 graduate scholarships generously offered by Taipei Tech”. said Sabine Klahr, interim vice provost for Penn State Global. “This is an exceptional opportunity for graduate students to engage in research and intercultural training at a top university in Taiwan where Penn State already has strong connections”.
The scholarship includes round-trip travel to Taipei (with the cost for airfare up to $2,000), two to six months lodging in Taipei, and a monthly stipend of NTD15,000 (approximately $450) during the research period. The awardees are required to assist EMI (English Medium Instruction) courses and/or workshops for an average of five hours each week.
“The scholarship will inspire our students to make the most of this opportunity by conducting collaborative research at Taipei Tech while gaining an understanding of the vibrant culture in Taiwan”, said Anna Marshall, associate director for Asia partnerships in Penn State Global.
Collaboration between Penn State and Taipei Tech began with the first biosensing research-focused agreement with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research in 2019. Since then, the bilateral partnership has grown to include a wide range of multidisciplinary research collaborations and academic programs.
In October 2022, a signing ceremony took place between Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi and Taipei Tech President Sea-Fue Wang, during which two agreements were signed: a seed grant collaboration with the Materials Research Institute and a concurrent graduate degree program in informatics. During the last Taipei Tech delegation visit in March 2024, Wang, who earned a doctorate in materials science from Penn State in 1991, proposed the idea of investing in 10 graduate scholarships annually, allowing Penn State students to conduct research at Taipei Tech during the summer.
“As an alumnus of Penn State, I have cherished memories of my time at my alma mater. Now, I would like to invite Penn State graduate students to do research at Taipei Tech. Through collaborative research, you will gain valuable insights into a cross-cultural and groundbreaking research environment at Taipei Tech. Our laboratories have strong connections with industry, and your time with us can transform into lifelong friendships and partnerships in your chosen fields”, said Wang. “By joining an authentic Hua-Yu/Chinese language class during your stay, you will experience the culture of Taiwan firsthand and share your knowledge with others through language exchange communities and EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) classes. I sincerely invite you to visit us, make Taipei Tech part of your academic journey, and let us dare to dream for a better world together”.
