Singapore's School Granted $1M from Ripple's UBRI for FinTech Education

  • The FinTech Lab at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) School of Computing has been granted $1 million by Ripple’s University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), a global enterprise blockchain and crypto solutions provider. This funding will sustain the FinTech Lab's operations for the next two years, fostering collaboration between Ripple and NUS in advancing innovation and thought leadership in fintech. Established in November 2019, the NUS FinTech Lab has evolved into a pivotal hub in Singapore's dynamic fintech and business ecosystem, engaging in strategic dialogue and research-driven innovation. Activities like the FinTech Brew, a regular coffee chat series, facilitate informal discussions where students and business leaders come together to address challenges in the fintech sector.

Moreover, the FinTech Lab's regular podcast series extends its global impact, offering valuable insights to both local and international audiences. Professor Tan Kian Lee, Dean of NUS School of Computing, highlighted the FinTech Lab's crucial role in bridging theory and practice. He stated, "This new phase of the NUS FinTech Lab symbolizes our commitment to integrating academic inquiry with practical industry solutions, cultivating an ecosystem abundant in innovation and impact". He added, "NUS became part of UBRI’s esteemed global academic partners in 2019 and has consistently driven widespread innovation through the NUS FinTech Lab ever since".

Aligned with the University and the School’s mission, the FinTech Lab actively promotes innovation and research leadership in collaboration with industry. The lab partners with Ripple’s UBRI program and other business collaborators to facilitate knowledge exchange and cooperative exploration. It also motivates students and young researchers to tackle contemporary challenges in the digital economy through regular workshops, conferences, hackathons, and knowledge transfer partnerships. Acknowledging the crucial role of academic rigor in advancing the global fintech sector and expressing gratitude for Ripple’s backing, Professor Hahn Jungpil, Director of the NUS FinTech Lab, stated, “The steadfast support from the UBRI program is invaluable in our mission to merge rigorous academic research with real-time solutions, addressing critical industry challenges and leading to impactful advancements in financial technology”.
