Sichuan University Expands Global Cooperation with Australia, Chile

  • Wang Jinsong, President of Sichuan University (SCU), led a delegation to visit Australia and Chile,aiming to advance high-quality development of SCU and enhance international cooperation.

    The delegation visited renowned universities and institutes, including University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Western Australia, University of Chile,Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC Chile University) and its CHRISTUS Clinical Hospital. SCU reached a consensus with these institutions on further expanding and deepening cooperation, enhancing mutual visits, promoting joint talent cultivation and collaborative scientific research to address critical challenges.

    In particular, SCU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Chile. Both sides will carry out practical cooperation in diverse areas, such as humanities and social sciences, mathematics and physics, medicine and health care. Meanwhile, Wang Jinsong had an in-depth exchange with Prof. Barry Marshall, a Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, on innovative education and cultivating talents with international perspective in medicine.

    During the trip, the delegation visited the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Chile. Wang also met SCU alumni studying or working there. He expressed his sincere greetings and best wishes, encouraging them to continue to strive for excellence and facilitate China-Australia and China-Chile friendly exchanges, while warmly inviting them to return to SCU for its 130th anniversary celebration.

    In addition, the delegation visited the Kwinana Lithium Hydroxide Refinery of Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia (TLEA) and the Chilean branch of Tianqi Lithium Corporation. The visit laid a solid foundation for cooperation in fostering specialized talent cultivation, establishing overseas practical education bases, as well as deepening international industry-university-research (IUR) collaboration in energy chemical engineering, supply chain management and the circular economy.

    This visit represents an important step taken by SCU to advance the opening-up of education and the strategy of internationalization, injecting new vitality into talent education, scientific research and discipline construction. SCU will continue to strengthen exchanges with other universities around the world, actively pursue comprehensive, multi-level and wide-ranging international collaborations, working together to advance development and prosperity of global higher education.
