SHSU-COM Joins China Medical University for Student and Faculty Exchange

  • Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine(SHSU-COM) Announces Partnership with China Medical University College of Chinese Medicine in Taichung, Taiwan Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine has announced a new collaboration and partnership with China Medical University College of Chinese Medicine in Taichung, Taiwan. This is a great opportunity for exchange in education and hands-on exposure between faculty and students.

The partnership will lay emphasis on developing joint educational programs as well as conducting innovative research and offering faculty and student exchange. The project aims to deepen perspectives and support enhancement in the osteopathic and traditional Chinese medical learning experiences. CMU-CCM is Taiwan's first-ever institution in Chinese medicine education and has evolved to become a leader in TCM and Integrative Health. Within 65 years of its existence, the university has graduated more than 10,000 physicians in TCM, whose majority have received dual master's degrees in both TCM and Western medicine.

One such claim to fame is the College of Chinese Medicine at CMU, such as its Graduate Institute of Acupuncture Science, the only institute of its kind in Taiwan, and international contributions to enhancing standards of TCM. The institution has worked with the World Health Organization and made contributions to international pharmacopeia's in advancing the recognition of TCM worldwide.

In October, the dean of SHSU-COM, Dr. Thomas Mohr, traveled to Taiwan to meet with the leadership of CMU and to continue discussions on the development of the partnership. While there, he attended a ceremony to commemorate the agreement and visited the Lifu Museum of Chinese Medicine on the campus of CMU. He also presented a lecture on osteopathic medicine and had the opportunity to tour the Department of Chinese Medicine at China Medical University Hospital (CMUH), where he met with CMU President Dr. Mien-Chie Hung.

Dean Dr Hung-Rong Yen expressed his enthusiasm for such collaboration and quoted, "This collaboration is a great leap forward in the integration of Eastern and Western medical traditions. Thereby combining CMU's existing expertise in Traditional Chinese Medicine with SHSU-COM's osteopathic principles, we are offering unique opportunities for our students while promoting integrative approaches to healthcare.

The new partnership resonates well with SHSU-COM's osteopathic manipulative medicine curriculum, integrating osteopathic care with TCM principles. This cooperative endeavor will increase the training for student doctors and promote a holistic approach to the care of patients.

According to Dr. Mohr, the collaboration is one of a kind as he noted: "Our work with China Medical University provides our students and faculty a rare opportunity to learn from one of Asia's leading institutions in integrative medicine. This partnership will enrich our educational experience, expand research possibilities, and explore new approaches to patient care through the blending of osteopathic and Chinese medical practices.

This is one of the first of its kind in the United States and marks a commitment to advancing medical education and research through global collaboration by SHSU-COM.
