The University of Danang-Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology recently organised the SeMI 2024 (International Workshop on Sensor Networks and Mobile Intelligence Vietnam Workshop) to make Japanese and Vietnamese researchers familiarise themselves with each other's work in sensor networks and mobile sensors. The meet was organized by UD-VKU under the aegis of the Technical Subcommittee of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, Japan.
The key attendees included UD-VKU Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap, and UD-VKU Vice-Rector, Dr. Tran The Son, and his representative, Dr. Huynh Ngoc Tho. From IEICE SeMI, two leaders were present: the chairman of the Technical Subcommittee at Hitachi Corporation, Japan Prof. Kazuya Monden, and two Vice- Chairmen, the chairman of the Technical Committee and the chairman of IEICE, Prof. Yasunori Owada at NICT, Japan and, Prof. Shunsuke Saruwatari of Osaka University, Japan. The event involved scholars and researchers from different universities in Vietnam and Japan, as well as faculty members and students from the Faculty of Computer Science and the Faculty of Computer Engineering and Electronics of UD-VKU.
Dr. Tran The Son – UD-VKU’s Vice Rector delivered the opening remark at SeMI 2024, Speaking at the opening ceremony of SeMI 2024, Dr. Tran The Son Vice Rector, Local Organizing Committee said that “with the role, position and responsibility of UD-VKU in the community and the development of science, technology, training in information technology and digital transformation for the Central – Central Highlands region and the whole country, we are honored to co-organize the SeMI 2024 International Workshop with IEICE. As one of three public universities specializing in information technology and the only university in the Central area– Western Highlands region specializing in training and in-depth research on information technology, communications, and digital economy, UD-VKU has created a great attraction for domestic and foreign scientists. This is also an important foundation for developing current smart applications and systems such as smart cities, smart transportation, smart agriculture, etc”.
Representing IEICE SeMI, Prof. Kazuya Monden – Chairman of the Technical Subcommittee, was pleased and gave special thanks to UD-VKU for accompanying and hosting SeMI 2024 in Da Nang. Thereby, Prof. Kazuya Monden said that SeMI was newly established in 2019 from 2 technical subcommittees Ambient Intelligence – Sensor Networks (ASN) and Mobile Networks – Applications (MoNA).
SeMI focused on research and development areas such as ubiquitous networks, mobile networks, and new fields based on mobile sensors. Specifically, in addition to research and development of sensor technology, SeMI targets mobile technologies, including connected cars, wearable technology and robotics, and mobile ubiquitous computing that extracts valuable knowledge from collected sensor data.
The SeMI 2024 Workshop marked a breakthrough in both research quality and international cooperation scale with diverse studies contributing to improving grasping new technologies, while also contributing to solving global practical challenges. In particular, research and development in the fields of smart sensors, AI, IoT, and networked systems have been creating outstanding applications, bringing great value to social life. Hopefully, the research presented at SeMI 2024 will continue to inspire and open up new directions for sustainable and comprehensive technology projects.
The SeMI 2024 International Workshop focused on three main objectives:
Promoting research cooperation among experts, scientists and lecturers from many countries in the field of sensor networks and mobile intelligence;
Sharing the latest research and discussing technology development trends in areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), smart wireless networks, and mobile information systems.
Applying technology in practice, especially in building smart cities, energy management, and wireless communications.
In addition to the discussion sessions, SeMI 2024 featured four keynote presentations that provided insights into cutting-edge technology trends in the field of sensor networks and mobile intelligence, such as:
A Lightweight Image-based Malware Detection Model for IoT devices focuses on developing a low-computational complexity malware detection model suitable for IoT devices, enhancing security without reducing device performance (Dr. Tran The Son-UD-VKU).
'Mobile wireless networks for underground sewer surveys' introduces mobile wireless networks for underground sewer surveys, optimizing data collection from hard-to-reach environments (Susumu Ishihara, Shizuoka University).
'HAPS Mobile Communications' presents advances in HAPS (High-Altitude Platform Stations) mobile communications, opening up efficient wireless connectivity possibilities from the upper atmosphere (Tomoaki Ohtsuki-Keio University).
'Circuit design in the AI era' explores the challenges and opportunities in electronic circuit design in the era of artificial intelligence, with a focus on performance optimization and AI applications in hardware development (Dr. Ray Nguyen-Marvell Semiconductor). These topics reflected the strong and diverse development trends in the fields of sensor networks, mobile intelligence, and AI applications.
Dr. Ray Nguyen – Senior Director of Analog and Hybrid Circuit Design at Marvell Technology, USA presented at the conference
Within the framework of the SeMI 2024, the Seminar on Regional Access Program, titled 'Inspiring the Young Generation with IC Design and Semiconductor Technology', was held on the afternoon of October 25, 2024. The seminar featured a presentation by Dr. Ray Nguyen, an outstanding engineer and Senior Director of Analog and Mixed-Signal Circuit Design at Marvell Technology in Silicon Valley, USA, on 'Circuit Design in the Era of Artificial Intelligence'. Dr. Nguyen also shared practical success stories to address current challenges.
The International Workshop on Sensor Networks and Mobile Intelligence Vietnam Workshop (SeMI 2024) was successfully held with in-depth discussions and presentations by leading experts from both Vietnam and abroad. This event served not only as a platform for exchanging cutting-edge research on sensor networks and mobile intelligence but also as a gateway for scientific collaboration among Vietnamese and international researchers, especially from Japan.
As the host institution, UD-VKU has reinforced its position as a leading university for education and research in the Central and Central Highlands regions, as well as nationwide, continuing its mission to advance digital transformation, information technology research, and related fields. UD-VKU’s participation in international academic events like SeMI not only provides opportunities to stay updated on the latest technological trends but also enhances the quality of its education and research, aiming to build a dynamic and modern academic environment.
