S. Korea Pledges Aid for Sri Lanka in Education and Jobs

  • South Korean Ambassador Miyon Lee met with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Colombo to discuss the follow-up actions on decisions made during Gunawardena's recent visit to South Korea. While in South Korea, Gunawardena held talks with various officials including his counterpart Han Duck-soo, National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo, Gyengsangbuk-do Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo, and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

    During these discussions, South Korea pledged increased support to Sri Lanka across multiple sectors such as education, health, renewable energy, employment, agriculture, and rural development. Responding to PM Gunawardena's request, South Korea agreed to provide smart classrooms to 1,000 schools in Sri Lanka to bolster the government's efforts in IT education at the school level. Additionally, South Korea will dispatch doctors and medical teams to conduct short-term medical practices at government hospitals and share their expertise with local doctors.

    Ambassador Lee affirmed her country's commitment to new development projects in Sri Lanka alongside the timely completion of ongoing ones. These include initiatives focusing on water treatment, sanitation, sewage disposal systems, and dry zone agriculture. Furthermore, South Korea plans to install floating solar panels on Chandrika Wewa in Ratnapura District as a pilot project in renewable energy.

    Moreover, South Korean leaders have agreed to expand the employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers, both in skilled sectors and seasonal agriculture. Expressing gratitude, the Prime Minister thanked the South Korean government for their exceptional cooperation and hospitality during his brief visit.
