Ruhuna University Alumni Launch Groundbreaking CSR Initiative

  • In response to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and other external factors affecting Sri Lanka's school system, the Ruhuna University Alumni Colombo Association has launched a significant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative known as "Akshara Saksharatha".

“This pilot project, aimed at enhancing essential learning skills among primary grade students, was launched in May 2021 and successfully implemented at Konwewa Siddhartha Vidyalaya,Galenbindunuwa Education Zone in Anuradhapura”, a news release from the association said.

Before the project began, a formal survey identified 30 students in grades two to five who lacked grade-appropriate skills in literacy, numeracy, reading, writing, and basic mathematics. Over a six-month period, the project received guidance and support from the North Central Provincial Council, the Provincial Department of Education, and the National Institute of Education (NIE).

During the program, students received nutritious meals and essential learning materials. Special supplementary learning sessions were conducted twice a week after school hours, emphasizing student-centered outdoor games, enjoyable activities, and interactive learning. To encourage self-directed learning, the NIE developed two Special Teacher Guide Manuals and provided thorough training to both teachers and parents.

The effectiveness of the “Akshara Saksharatha” program was rigorously evaluated through independent assessments during and at the end of the six-month period. Using action research strategies in pedagogy, maintaining reflective journals, and closely monitoring student progress, the evaluations revealed that the skill levels (both knowledge and leadership) of approximately 95% of the participating students had significantly improved.

Based on the achievements of this initial project, innovative learning methods and strategies are now being introduced in approximately 75 schools within the Galenbidunuwewa Educational Zone. A detailed final report outlining the program's observations and outcomes has been published, showcasing significant progress made.

“To further share the journey and success of “Akshara Saksharatha,” the Ruhuna University Alumni Association has produced a documentary film titled “Akuru Panthiya.” This film, which provides an in-depth look into the program’s implementation and impact, is now available for viewing on YouTube”.
