Rela Institute and Medical Centre (RIMC), in association with Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, has achieved a first by becoming the first institution outside the United Kingdom to host the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (RCSP), Glasgow's Annual Membership Exams in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics.
The first stage of the highly regarded two-part examination tailored for postgraduate specialists took place at RIMC. Over 46 specialists from worldwide, including India, attended this event, and the examinations were conducted by 18 examiners from the UK and Malaysia.
The two-part global examination offers a rare and coveted pathway for successful candidates to earn Membership of the MOrth RCPS, making them eligible to graduate from the prestigious University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. The first part consists of a written exam, while the second part, held after a year, involves a clinical assessment.
With RIMC designated as the global center for 2024, the first phase of the exam was conducted. The MOrth RCPS qualification and membership establish a global benchmark of excellence. To be eligible for the exam, candidates must hold an MDS Master’s Degree as a prerequisite.
This qualification provides candidates with greater recognition and preference for employment worldwide. Notably, some renowned international hospitals mandate MOrth as a basic requirement for job applications. In his remarks, Prof. Mohammed Rela, Chancellor - Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER) and Chairman and Managing Director of Rela Hospital, said, “We are proud that RIMC has become the only examination center outside the UK for this prestigious global exam.
For the first time in the program’s distinguished history, specialists and examiners from around the world participated in the exam outside the United Kingdom. A select group of 46 candidates from diverse regions, including China, Oman, Egypt, Sri Lanka, and Saudi Arabia, underwent rigorous evaluations under the supervision of 18 esteemed examiners from the UK and Malaysia, fully adhering to the high standards upheld in the UK.
For Indian candidates, this is a transformative opportunity to access world-class education and certification within the country, easing the financial burden of studying abroad while earning globally recognised credentials. This initiative underscores the importance of international collaboration and sets a significant benchmark for educational innovation and professional development.”
The Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Glasgow, has been exploring global partnerships for conducting its examinations outside the UK. After evaluating several options, the Academic Council of the Royal College ultimately selected Rela Institute as the designated center based on RIMC’s reputation for clinical excellence, patient care, treatment execution, infrastructure, and academic and research capabilities, all of which align closely with the standards upheld by the Royal College of Glasgow.
In addition to its world-class faculty, all of whom are MOrth RCPS qualified and former members, RIMC’s clinical excellence also made it a fitting partner for this prestigious global examination. The event was graced by Dr. Kannan, Dean of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital, Dr. S. Bhuminathan, Registrar, BIHER and Dr.Badri Thiruvengatachari, Research Director BIHER.
