Over forty participants from RENKEI member universities in Japan and the United Kingdom attended a health workshop organized by Keio University at the Tsuruoka Town Campus.
'RENKEI' stands for the Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives and is a university consortium focusing on research collaborations between ten institutions in Japan and the UK. During the three-day workshop, attendees took active roles in discussions on increasing life expectancy, how to solve issues that can lead to a healthier society, dietary and lifestyle habits, technology, and community health care.
Nine researchers represented Keio University at the workshop, including Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya, Professor Kazuharu Arakawa (Director of the Institute for Advanced Biosciences), and Professor Yasumichi Arai (Director of the Center for Supercentenarian Medical Research). Each introduced various research initiatives taking place at Keio, especially focusing on university-launched venture companies that have emerged from research findings at the Institute for Advanced Biosciences and medical studies about the secrets to longevity for people living over 100 years.
After this workshop ended, another RENKEI workshop, this time hosted by Kyushu University and focusing on climate change, was held from December 4 to December 6. Vice-President Tsuchiya and a doctoral student attended on behalf of Keio University. Throughout the workshop, participants contributed to discussions about how to address climate change, drawing on diverse perspectives in engineering, biology, agriculture, chemistry, and economics.
