RCSI Bahrain promotes Global Collaboration for Student Electives

  • The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Medical University of Bahrain recently welcomed international dignitaries to its campus, aiming to bolster its global collaboration framework for student benefit.

Earlier this year, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, hosted His Excellency Mr. Saqib Rauf, Ambassador of Pakistan to Bahrain, and Ms. Tahira Saleem, Community Welfare Attache, to explore a collaboration opportunity with Aga Khan University in Karachi regarding research and clinical electives. His Excellency praised the quality of university graduates, pledged support to Pakistani students, and offered assistance in establishing academic connections with Pakistani universities and hospitals.

Furthermore, a delegation from Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC), USA, headed by Professor Susan Moffatt-Bruce, President of LHMC, along with Dr. Wael Al-Husami and Dr. Jalil Afnan, visited the campus to discuss ongoing collaboration. They aimed to broaden the scope of specialities for electives, as well as create residency and fellowship opportunities for graduates.

During their Bahrain visit, the LHMC delegation met with His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health, and His Excellency Brigadier Professor Fahad Khalifa Al-Khalifa, Commander of the Royal Medical Services, along with students who had participated in electives at the Medical Center.

Since establishing a partnership with LHMC in 2016, over 70 RCSI Medical University of Bahrain students have pursued electives at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, resulting in several securing residency training positions.

Professor Otoom expressed gratitude for the support received and emphasized the goal of fostering an international collaboration framework. This aims to equip students with skills to navigate the healthcare landscape and inspire a future focused on better health and well-being.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain is part of the Visiting Students Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program, facilitating global mobility for student electives. Through this program, students can access elective opportunities with renowned institutions worldwide.
