Raibevu Students Given New Hope for Academic and Career Success

  • Over 85 students of the Jeremiah Raibevu College in Tacirua stand to gain from a new structure that was inaugurated yesterday. The structure, which was put up between the years 2020 and 2021, was opened by Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro MICHII and Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro and has classes and a single science laboratory.

    The government of Japan, via the Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects scheme, offered funding of $213,570 for the construction of the classrooms and furniture. Tremendous support was garnered from members of the community and landowning units, including the Nazareth Construction Company, comprising parents and supporters of the institution, which lowered the cost of labor.

    Permanent Secretary Merewalesi Tuiloma echoed her appreciation, underlining the importance of offering equal access to education for everyone.She further explained that the structure symbolizes commitments in common by offering education that is future-focused and values-driven. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro reiterated the commitment of the government to reach even further, such that every Fijian will have equal access to quality education.

    "By constructing and improving schools such as this one, we are giving our students the finest possible facilities and helping them realize their potential". Japanese ambassador Rokuichiro MICHII added the new facility is a reflection of the commitment of the Japanese government to supporting Fiji's development and grassroots progress.

    More than $30 million has been invested in Fiji under its GGP program since 1990, and 423 projects have stimulated growth in different sectors. Villages such as Kalabu and surrounding villages are now reaping the benefits particularly education. And as the events unfolded, Radrodro also presented a new classroom block and a computer laboratory to Tacirua Primary School, which is just adjacent to the college.

    The structure was funded under the Ministry of Education's Free Education Grant Scheme of $60,600. He said the structure also forms part of the ministry's overall commitment towards Sustainable Development 4, with a focus on inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all.
