PolyU and Shandong First Medical University Partner to Advance Cancer Research

  • The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Shandong First Medical University (SDFMU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster collaboration in medical education, research, and innovation. The partnership aims to enhance healthcare professional training and advance tumour radiotherapy through joint research initiatives.

The signing ceremony of the MoU was held last month in Jinan, Shandong Province. Key officials who attended the ceremony included Mr. Chen Ping, Vice Governor of Shandong Province; Prof. Jing Cai, Head of PolyU's Department of Health Technology and Informatics; Prof. Yip Shea-ping, Chair Professor of Diagnostic Science and Molecular Genetics at PolyU; Prof. Sijin Liu, Secretary of the Party Committee of SDFMU; and Prof. Yu Jinming, Hospital President of the Cancer Hospital of SDFMU. The agreement was signed and sealed by Dean of PolyU's Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Prof. David Shum, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of SDFMU, Prof. Wang Yuxuan.

Speaking on the collaboration, Prof. David Shum emphasized the importance of the partnership in advancing medical research and education. “The signing of this MoU marks a significant step as PolyU and SDFMU combine their expertise to drive breakthroughs in health technology and cancer treatment. Our joint efforts will contribute to the development of cutting-edge radiation oncology solutions”, he stated.

Prof. Wang Yuxuan echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the broader impact of the partnership. “This collaboration represents our shared vision for medical advancements. We aim to strengthen exchanges in talent nurturing, research, and clinical practice, injecting fresh momentum into the healthcare sector in both the Mainland and Hong Kong”.

Under the agreement, both institutions will explore academic and professional exchange programs, joint research projects, and the establishment of collaborative laboratories. By leveraging their respective strengths PolyU’s expertise in health technology and SDFMU’s clinical experience in tumour radiotherapy the partnership aspires to cultivate future medical talent and drive research outcomes that will elevate healthcare standards.

During the visit, a delegation from PolyU’s Department of Health Technology and Informatics participated in the 2nd Cancer Particle Radiotherapy Conference, co-hosted by the Cancer Hospital of SDFMU and the Shandong Anti-Cancer Association. The conference brought together over 2,000 global experts to discuss advancements in cancer treatment, particularly particle radiotherapy.

At the gathering, Prof. Jing Cai delivered a keynote speech on artificial intelligence in radiotherapy, as it has immense potential to transform cancer treatment in the future. The delegates would discuss pioneering concepts, new technologies, and their outcomes in relation to treatment; this would signify the commitment by PolyU and SDFMU towards the radiation oncology for the future.

With this partnership, PolyU and SDFMU hope to make significant contributions to the enhancement of medical education, research, and patient care, further innovation in China's healthcare industry.
