Philippine Government and Australian University Partner for Digital Change

  • The Philippine Government is making significant strides in digital transformation with support from The University of Adelaide. Through the Australia Awards and Alumni Engagement Program, the Australian Government is funding two specialized short courses for five key Philippine Government agencies. These courses aim to enhance the skills and capabilities necessary for a rapid digital transformation, crucial for the future workforce in the Philippines. The first course, titled 'Digital Transformation Strategy Development and Implementation', commenced in January 2024. The initial module involves a benchmarking study to Australia, where Filipino officials will engage with counterparts at State and Federal agencies involved in government services digitalization. Subsequently, officials from the Philippine Government agencies will participate in the second module focusing on the development of digital and data competencies for Filipino civil servants.

The University of Adelaide's Professional and Continuing Education division is administering the two short courses, specializing in providing workforce training, development, and credentials to help organizations address current and emerging industry and business trends. Dr. Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President at The University of Adelaide, expressed her excitement about the collaboration. Dr. Gallagher mentioned, "Our track record in delivering transformative workplace training uniquely positions us to support individuals and organizations in adapting to and thriving in the evolving work landscape". She further added, "We are thrilled to share our expertise with the Philippines through the prestigious Australia Awards, recognized for their significant global impact. It is an honor to contribute to the Philippines' public sector's digital transformation journey".

Representatives from the Civil Service Commission, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Budget and Management, Department of Information and Communications Technology, and the National Economic and Development Authority are presently in Australia. Their visit encompasses immersive training sessions at the University of Adelaide, tours of Australian Government agencies to gain insights into digital transformation, and involvement in diplomatic and cultural activities. The Honourable Karlo B. Nograles, Chair of the Philippines Civil Service Commission, has conveyed significant enthusiasm for the transformative opportunities presented by these educational engagements.
