Penang Science Cluster organized the 3rd FTC Malaysia Championship

  • The Penang Science Cluster, a recipient of STEM funding from Arrow Electronics, recently hosted the third annual FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Malaysia Championship in Penang, attracting 22 teams from 17 local schools. FTC, which is part of the FIRST Robotics Competition, tasks student teams with constructing and programming large-scale robots.

Pasirian Rex and Robodes claimed the top two spots, earning the opportunity to compete in the 2024 FIRST Championship in Houston in mid-April. This will be Pasirian Rex's inaugural appearance at the competition, marking their first international venture outside of Malaysia.

Aimy Lee, the chief operating officer of the Penang Science Cluster, expressed excitement about witnessing students' efforts during the FTC, emphasizing the months of collaboration, problem-solving, and mentorship involved. The organization plans to continue facilitating such opportunities for students and mentors through various programs, including the FTC.

FTC engages students aged 12 to 18, pairing them with adult coaches who guide them through the process of building and programming robots using reusable platforms. Over 50 mentors, teachers, and volunteers supported this year's competition.

Arrow Electronics announced its partnership with the Penang Science Cluster in late 2023, providing funding to support the organization's initiatives in 2024. Additionally, Arrow employees in Malaysia have volunteered for the nonprofit's events, such as serving as judges for Coolest Projects Malaysia, an invention competition.

Arrow Electronics is committed to advancing STEM education globally and has been a longstanding supporter of FIRST. With sales reaching $33 billion in 2023, Arrow focuses on developing technology solutions that enhance both business operations and daily life.
