NTU Invests $4m to Enhance AI Education, Introduces AI Scholar Programs

  • Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is introducing a novel interdisciplinary degree program focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and ethics. The four-year Bachelor of Science in AI and Society program aims to address workforce demands in the digital technology industry. Commencing in August 2024 with an initial cohort of 60 students, the curriculum will provide students with foundational mathematical and computational skills to create advanced AI solutions. Additionally, the program will delve into the ethical dimensions of AI, examining issues such as inequality, bias, and misinformation perpetuated by AI systems.

The program allows students to select electives from non-STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) schools within NTU, including the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, and Nanyang Business School. Enrollees are required to take three core modules in AI ethics and society, reflecting a commitment to responsible AI. The curriculum will cover real-world AI applications aligned with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, addressing issues like inclusive education and poverty alleviation. Students will also explore ethical considerations and strategies to mitigate potential challenges in the conceptualization, development, and integration of AI systems. The program delves into pressing concerns at the intersection of AI and society, such as the propagation of misinformation.

NTU already offers an existing Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) since August 2018, making the new AI and Society program its second AI-related course. The DSAI program encompasses modules like software engineering and data analytics not present in the recently introduced program. Although both courses share foundational modules in computer science and AI, such as discrete mathematics and algorithm design and analysis, they differ in certain aspects. Graduates from the AI and Society course will be equipped for STEM roles, serving as specialists in AI ethics and governance, as well as AI scientists across industries like banking and healthcare. NTU is also providing a Turing AI Scholars Programme aimed at propelling AI talent toward developing impactful solutions on a global scale.
