The Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) has launched its very first Research Conference, two days of keynote addresses, panel discussions, research paper presentations, and interactive workshops.
This year's theme is 'Shaping and Innovating Policies for a Sustainable Future in Expanding Economic Research', emphasizing the role economic research plays in developing policies which are forward-looking and lead towards sustainable growth.
The conference brought together a diverse group of participants, including researchers, financial institutions, and professionals in economics and financial technology from both the Maldives and abroad. The opening ceremony was graced by Chancellor of Maldives National University (MNU), Dr Mahamood Shougee, Governor Ahmed Munawar and Deputy Governor Ahmed Imad.
Governor Munawar highlighted the critical role of comprehensive research in formulating effective policies, while Dr Shougee, the chief guest, highlighted the need for collaboration among various Maldivian agencies to drive progress through economic research.
At the event, Dr Shougee also inaugurated the MMA Research Fund, established with an initial allocation of MVR 1 million.
The fund is designed to encourage research by creating opportunities and an enabling environment for researchers. It is open to contributions from both local and international organizations.
Two MoUs were signed during the conference. The first, with Universiti Islam Selangor Malaysia, aims to promote economic research and collaboration in education and innovation. The second, with Dhiraagu, which focuses on expanding research for a sustainable future and developing innovative products.
Panel discussions focused on topics including financial technology and the impact of climate change and global energy production shifts on vulnerable nations like the Maldives.
Presentations of research papers provided insights into various subjects, including income disparities, inflation trends across the Maldives, the impact of GST on prices, and rent price dynamics in Male' City.
