The Ministry of Higher Education has pledged to enhance the administration of student organizations governed by the University and University College Act (AUKU) 1971 to promote greater student engagement in university activities. Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, the Minister, emphasized this commitment during a recent buka puasa event at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), where he underscored the importance of nurturing student leadership within universities.
The recent amendments to AUKU, which passed in Dewan Negara, included modifications to Sections 16B and 15A, focusing on disciplinary measures within universities and the handling of cash donations by student councils. These changes aim to streamline the regulatory framework and empower student leadership roles within the university community.
Zambry's remarks highlight the government's dedication to fostering leadership skills among students, aligning with broader national goals championed by the Prime Minister. By shaping effective leadership structures within universities, the government aims to cultivate a more vibrant and participatory student community, enhancing the overall educational experience.
Furthermore, during the event, Zambry demonstrated the government's commitment to supporting students from various backgrounds by distributing zakat and festive aid to Tahfiz Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students as well as those from the B40 group. This gesture underscores the government's holistic approach to ensuring equitable access to education and opportunities for all segments of society.
The AUKU, enacted in 1971 and subsequently amended in 1975 and 1995, serves as a cornerstone legislation governing the establishment, organization, and management of universities and public university colleges in Malaysia. Under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education, this act plays a pivotal role in regulating university affairs and promoting student welfare.
