In August of 2023, Miles Ahead Charter School commenced operations just outside Atlanta, representing the culmination of Kolt Bloxson's arduous four-year journey. This tuition-free institution, catering to kindergarten through eighth grade, was established with the aim of bridging the educational gap for Black students in underserved areas. With a team of 14 teachers, eight support staff, and an enrollment of 195 students, the school stands as a beacon of hope and innovation, prioritizing STEAM subjects and holistic development in its curriculum.
The genesis of Miles Ahead Charter School arose from the amalgamation of two elementary schools and the looming specter of further closures, underlining the pressing need for quality educational avenues. Bloxson, a seasoned educator, embraced the challenge by assembling a board, selecting teachers, and navigating state regulations to realize her vision. Despite facing a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the additional time allowed for a more meticulous approach, involving stakeholders in the vision and fostering a strong sense of community before the school's inauguration.
Education at Miles Ahead transcends conventional academic boundaries. The curriculum, enriched with STEAM courses such as coding, is structured to nurture students comprehensively. This innovative pedagogy, facilitated by specialists, empowers teachers to tailor their methods to cater to diverse student needs, ensuring a more engaging learning experience. The school ethos, encapsulated in the High Five Habits—Kindness, Integrity, Determination, Compassion, and Wonder—serves as a daily mantra, cultivating personal growth and mutual respect among students.
