Massey University Confirms Plan for the Singapore Branch

  • Massey University has announced plans to extend its educational services to students who prefer not to study in New Zealand by establishing a branch in Singapore through a partnership with PSB Academy, an education provider. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon during his visit to Southeast Asia, where he expressed his endorsement of the collaboration as a reflection of the shared commitment between New Zealand and Singapore to enhance education and global partnerships.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas emphasized Massey's focus on sharing expertise and catering to a wider audience. With Singapore serving as an established market, it presents a strategic base for expanding into Southeast Asia and beyond. Massey has a strong reputation in Singapore and across Southern and Southeast Asia since its inception there in 2008.

The university's expansion plans include offering courses in media, design, management, and other fields. However, the move has drawn criticism from the Tertiary Education Union, particularly in light of local job cuts. Responding to these concerns, Thomas highlighted the importance of diversifying Massey's revenue streams to ensure sustainability amidst pressures on government funding for universities in New Zealand. She emphasized the university's commitment to adaptability and securing alternative sources of income.

Massey aims to enrol 5000 international students from offshore locations by 2026, with Singapore playing a significant role in achieving this goal. The establishment of a branch in Singapore reflects Massey's strategic approach to global expansion, leveraging its reputation and expertise to cater to the diverse needs of students beyond New Zealand's borders.
