LG, UNESCO to Create Online AI Ethics Course

  • LG AI Research, a division of LG Group dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence, has announced a significant collaboration with UNESCO aimed at developing an educational program focused on the ethical implications of AI technology. This partnership, formalized during the recent AI Seoul Summit, entails the creation of an advisory panel comprising experts from around the globe within the coming year.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to establish a comprehensive curriculum on AI ethics, scheduled for launch by the conclusion of 2025. LG has expressed its intention to share preliminary progress updates during the AI Action Summit in Paris the following year. The educational resources developed through this initiative will be accessible to individuals worldwide via UNESCO's Global AI Ethics and Governance Observatory platform.

A key aspect of the project involves soliciting AI ethics case studies from various stakeholders, including governments, corporations, academic institutions, and civil society organizations. These real-world scenarios will inform the design of educational materials tailored to both industry professionals and policymakers.

Kim Soo-hyun, director of UNESCO Asia and Pacific, underscored the broader significance of the collaboration, emphasizing its role in promoting responsible AI development and fostering ethical innovation on a global scale. Beyond the educational aspect, the partnership aims to cultivate a community dedicated to ethical AI practice.

In addition to the core educational initiative, LG and UNESCO have outlined plans for supplementary activities aimed at raising awareness of AI ethics. These efforts may include hosting international events, and forums, and exploring additional initiatives to engage stakeholders worldwide.

Bae Kyung-hoon, chief of LG AI Research, emphasized the critical importance of enhancing awareness of AI ethics among researchers and policymakers to ensure the safety and responsible deployment of AI technologies. Through this collaborative endeavour, LG and UNESCO aspire to bolster the ethical capabilities of professionals involved in AI development and policymaking worldwide.
