Korea Register, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Marine Solution have formally established a strategic collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement is aimed at spearheading an advanced ship education and training initiative using extended reality (XR) technology. The signing event took place at the HD HHI Digital Convergence Center in Ulsan, South Korea. This innovative partnership seeks to create an advanced virtual reality representation of ships by integrating intricate 3D CAD models with 360-degree videos of real vessels. Additionally, the collaboration plans to develop XR-enhanced ship trial content, revolutionizing crew training and educational services.
Pioneering advancements in maritime training resources, HD KSOE and HD HHI will collaborate closely to incorporate their in-house digital twin solution, HiDTS, into KR's ship familiarization training and education platform, KR-Real 360. The delivery of contemporary training materials will be synchronized with substantial support from HD HMS. KWON Byounghun, the Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Research Lab at HD KSOE, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential benefits. This collaborative effort aims to provide customers with a realistic ship education and training system, enabling swift adaptation to changes in onboard operating systems such as decarbonization and digitization.
Emphasizing the importance of the collaboration, Kim Daeheon, the Executive Vice President of KR’s R&D Division, expressed that it holds significance for them to create a solution tailored for shipyards and shipping companies, leveraging KR’s XR technology capabilities and HD Hyundai’s proficiency in ship design and verification. The intention is to elevate the technical support offered to customers, facilitating the proactive integration of cutting-edge digital technologies.
