The Japanese School of Guam, which has decided to officially adopt the name the Japanese International Academy of Guam beginning April 2025, cited careful consideration as well as school community input on the decision after it considered how its mission continues to evolve as it seeks to provide quality education while promoting the exchange of culture between Japan and Guam.
School President Saeko Tokito said in a statement that the institution is committed to deepening ties between Japan and Guam, serving as a bridge connecting the two cultures. "Our commitment to our community extends beyond the classroom we strive to nurture future talent who grow up on our campus, where the philosophy of Japanese education and the spirit of Japan thrive", Tokito said. She added that the school will continue to inspire and empower students to contribute both locally and globally.
The new name fits well with the institution's emphasis on bilingual education, cultural understanding, and academic excellence. The school reconfirmed its commitment to offering a balanced education based on Japanese educational standards while retaining its status as an accredited overseas educational institution of the Japanese government. At the same time, it will continue to operate as a private school in the United States, underlining its dual accreditation.
Despite the nomenclature, the core school philosophy remains untouched 'A Place Where Dreams Take Flight'. Its goal is to nurture students not only to achieve excellence in Japan but also on Guam and ultimately in the rest of the globe. The curriculum and educational process, according to the school, will remain similar, thus availing the student with the exact same academic intensity.
The Japanese International Academy of Guam will remain open to all students regardless of their background, but this new chapter in the academy's history will prove a great opportunity. Tokito expressed her appreciation for this school community as 'still completely important to that participation with the encouragement of the institution's growth and success'.
