Japanese Embassy and Plan International Japan Launch Gender Equality Education Project in Vietnam's Mountainous Regions

  • The Japanese Embassy in Vietnam and Plan International Japan signed a non-refundable aid agreement to launch a new project aimed at promoting gender-equal education for children in northern Vietnam’s mountainous regions.

The project, titled ‘Improving the Learning Environment from a Gender Equality Perspective in Primary and Secondary Schools in Ha Giang and Lai Chau Provinces’, will receive 1.65 million USD in funding and is set to run from March 2025 to February 2028. It will focus on improving the learning conditions in Meo Vac and Yen Minh districts in Ha Giang province and Sin Ho district in Lai Chau province, areas that face significant challenges in education and gender equality.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Ito Naoki, highlighted that since 2002, the Japanese government has supported 96 projects in Vietnam, working with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in fields such as economic development, poverty alleviation, and education. He reiterated Japan’s commitment to collaborating with NGOs and local authorities to ensure the success of future initiatives.

Yurie Mizukami, Programme Manager of Plan International Vietnam, explained that the project will be implemented across 26 primary and secondary schools and is expected to impact around 10,000 students, 3,680 parents, and approximately 100 local officials. The project’s goals include improving the learning environment from a gender-equality standpoint and enhancing students’ understanding of reproductive health and rights.

A significant aspect of the project is its focus on active student participation, particularly involving ethnic minority students. These students will take on leadership roles in shaping a more inclusive learning environment, helping to promote comprehensive sexuality education in their communities.

This project aims to create a more equitable and inclusive educational experience for children in remote and underdeveloped areas of Vietnam. By improving gender equality awareness and educational resources, it hopes to empower children, especially girls, to reach their full
