Japan to Fund Major Renovation of School in Sagsai Soum

  • The Government of Japan, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, will support the renovation of Secondary School No.1 in Sagsai soum, Bayan-Ulgii aimag, Mongolia. This agreement was formalized with the signing of a contract by Igawahara Masaru, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia, and Zangar Esentay, the Governor of Bayan-Ulgii aimag.

The renovation work will involve roofing and interior of the school, electrical system up gradation, a new ventilation system, and the replacing of heating pipes and radiators throughout the building.

Ambassador Igawahara Masaru emphasized that the implementation of this project would improve the school's environment, creating a safe and healthy learning and working environment for 1,006 students and 132 teachers.

    S. Armanbek, the Principal of the Secondary School №1 in Sagsai soum of Bayan-Ulgii aimag, noted, “Our school was established in 1948. This academic year, we have over 1,000 students and 133 teachers and staff. Our school building was put into operation in 1974 and underwent major renovations in 2005. Since then, there have been no further renovations, and the school has become old. Thanks to the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects of the Government of Japan, our school will undergo major renovations”.

The Government of Japan has implemented the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in Mongolia for 34 years, since 1990. This school renovation project marks the 608th project funded by the Grant Assistance in Mongolia and the 23rd project in Bayan-Ulgii aimag. The ceiling amount of funding approved for this project is USD 225,711.

The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects is a collaborative project involving urban and local governments, education and health institutions in developing countries, and Japan's diplomatic missions abroad.
